PRESS RELEASE NO. 011-2016

DISTRICT COURT OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS TO HOST
U.S. SUPREME COURT JUSTICE SONIA SOTOMAYOR
IN CELEBRATION OF THE CENTENNIAL

The Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, has accepted an invitation from the Honorable Wilma A. Lewis, Chief Judge of the District Court of the Virgin Islands, to visit the Territory in celebration of the Transfer Day Centennial. Judge Lewis commented: “The District Court is pleased and honored to have the privilege of hosting Justice Sotomayor on her visit to the Virgin
Islands. We look forward to welcoming her and facilitating her interaction with the people of the Virgin Islands.”

The Honorable Sonia Sotomayor—the first U.S. Supreme Court Justice of Hispanic heritage—assumed the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on August 8, 2009, after being nominated by President Barack Obama. Her previous judicial appointments were on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1998-2009, and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1992-1998.

During her visit to the Virgin Islands, beginning on February 7, 2017, Justice
Sotomayor will be featured at several events in the Territory. Highlights of her itinerary are expected to include public events on the islands of St. Croix and St. Thomas; participation in a centennial activity; interaction with local high school and University of the Virgin Islands students; and an event with the federal and local judiciary. Additional details regarding the events will be posted on the District Court’s website, www.vid.uscourts.gov, as they become available.
